CHP: Deputy Entered Intersection Against Red Light, Was Going 85 mph

The California Highway Patrol says a Kern County Sheriff’s deputy should have done more to avoid a deadly crash at North Chester Avenue and West China Grade Loop in Oildale.

Capt. Paul Medeiros says CHP is recommending the district attorney’s office consider manslaughter charges against Nicolas Clerico after he struck Nancy Garrett’s vehicle at 85 mph last November while en route to a call.

“We determined he entered the intersection against a steady red light,” he said. “At the same time, Mrs. Garrett was traveling eastbound and the two collided.”

Garrett’s family will file a civil lawsuit against the sheriff’s office and Kern County next week.
