The 17-year-old boy who was rescued by a Bakersfield police officer and firefighters after jumping into the lake at Riverwalk Park has died.

Sgt. Joe Grubbs is with BPD and says it took about two minutes for the child to be pulled from the body of water before 7 p.m. Sunday.

“He was transported to Mercy Southwest Hospital in critical condition and he later succumbed to the drowning,” he said.

Witnesses say the teenager didn’t know how to swim.
