SHOOTING IN PARK, ACROSS FROM SCHOOLS

A shooting death right across the street from two central Bakersfield schools left one man dead. Police say three men drove off in a red pickup after the shooting around 1:30 PM Thursday. The body lay in the middle of Lowell Park on 4th Street as children from McKinley Elementary and Emerson Middle Schools got out of session and parents arrived to pick up their kids. The park was blocked with police tape and the body lay under a tarp as children and neighbors looked on. The school placed itself on lock down when they heard shots fired. A nearby apartment had a window broken by a stray bullet. The coroner’s office will release the identity of the victim.
