Opening statements have been made in the trial of a gang member charged with killing a man and leaving his burned body in an orchard.

The prosecution says Matthew Mejia beat Justin Brewer last year over stolen cell phones while the defense argues the real killers are co-defendants Amber Sanders and Jesse Gomez, who took plea deals then framed his client.
