Bakersfield police are having success in a push to seize firearms with about 500 taken so far this year. The variety of weapons seized ranges from pistols to shotguns and assault weapons, which are first held as evidence, then the guns are destroyed. Police Sgt. Gary Carruesco believes the effort to gets guns off the streets will eventually translate to less violent crime, about 300 guns were seized by police last year.
