AIS BREAST CENTER WINS NATIONAL RECOGNITION

Adventist Health Hospital in downtown Bakersfield is celebrating a big milestone in their treatment of breast cancer: Recognition by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers. At Friday’s celebration, nurse Jacquie Engstrand was applauded for knitting over 100 prosthetics known as ‘knockers’ for women who’ve had mastectomies, which she says are immensely more comfortable than the heavy, silicon replacements they get post-surgery. Speakers pointed out that new therapies and equipment mean cancer is no longer an automatic death sentence and is treated more like a chronic disease.
