Kern County students were encouraged to snuff out cigarettes during the Great American Smokeout. The awareness event was staged Wednesday morning at the Bakersfield Sound Museum, and several musicians were brought in to make the message more memorable.

Teen smoking rates have gone up in Kern County, while more than 16-percent of local stores sold cigarettes to minors last year.
