The state is paying for Kern County firefighters to install breaks and clear brush in several areas at risk for wildfires.

Fire Plans Battalion Chief Steve Pendergrass says the projects in Tehachapi and Lebec got approved because of the current heat wave, but they had been in the works for awhile. Crews will be in those communities through the end of the week.
