WARNING: WATCH FOR JAYWALKERS

Kern County Public Works has put up 17 signs in Oildale and East Bakersfield to warn drivers about pedestrians who dart into the street.

Supervisor Mike Maggard says the Pedestrian Safety Corridor project targets areas with a history of fatal accidents, which are often caused by people who jaywalk under the influence. The florescent green signs on Norris Road, Union Avenue, and other problem areas get bright when headlights hit them.

Bakersfield has the most pedestrian deaths in California.
