More than 60 local law enforcement officers have escorted the body of Kern Valley State Prison corrections officer Armando Gallegos from Bakersfield to his home in Visalia.

Gallegos died last month after being beaten by 12 inmates at the Delano facility in April. The attack left him with broken vertebrae, a broken nose, and a concussion, but it’s not clear what killed him.

The California Department of Corrections wants at least seven of those inmates to be charged with attempted murder.
