The Bakersfield Homeless Shelter and Supervisor Mike Maggard have started the District 3 Strike Team, which pays homeless people to clean up Oildale and east Bakersfield.

Residents on social media say they are grateful trash is getting picked up, but Maggard feels there are other benefits to the program like offering a pathway out of homelessness through job skills.

Kern County is spending $30,000 a year on the program.
