(Sacramento, CA) — Governor Gavin Newsom suggests the Pac 12 could have a football season, contradicting his own state guidelines. He told the Bay Area News group yesterday that there is nothing in those guidelines that prevents conference games. But actually, those guidelines directly prohibit players from gathering in cohorts larger than 12 and football requires 22 players on the field at once. Newsom didn’t address the contradiction directly but said the state would be willing “to engage the Pac-12” on the rules governing cohorts. The Pac-12 is the only major conference still sidelined now that the Big Ten has reversed itself, announcing yesterday it will begin its season on October 23rd.
