Man Killed in Officer-Involved-Shooting

The Bakersfield Police are investigating what led to a stabbing and subsequent officer-involved-shooting in central Bakersfield.

On Friday, August 13th, 2021, at 8:47 AM, the Bakersfield Police Department received a call regarding a peace disturbance in an apartment complex in the 200 block of Stephens Drive. The caller advised that they could hear yelling from an apartment, between a male and female. The caller advised that the male subject was possibly under the influence of drugs.

Several additional calls were received in the area, involving a male subject screaming and possibly under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

At 8:51 AM, responding units attempted contact at an apartment in the complex. At 9:08 AM the officers requested the Mental Health Evaluation Team and an ambulance to stage in the area.

Due to sounds of distress coming from the apartment, officers forced entry into the apartment. An officer involved shooting took place inside of the apartment.

An adult female victim was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening stab wounds. The adult male suspect succumbed to gunshot injuries and was declared deceased at the scene. Multiple knives were recovered from the suspect.

Three officers discharged their firearms and no one else was injured. All of the officers were equipped with body-worn cameras.

The circumstances of this deadly force encounter are currently under investigation and more details will be forthcoming as this investigation develops.

The identity of the deceased will be released by the Kern County Coroner’s Office.
