BAKERSFIELD, CA (KUZZ) –Community members from Lamont and Fuller Acres are speaking out against proposed changes related to hydrogen use at a local oil refinery.
The San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District invited members of the public to attend a meeting in Lamont Monday night to learn about plans by Kern Energy to install a hydrogen purification unit storage system and fuel cells that generate electricity at its plant on East Panama Lane.
The company says the fuel cells produce minimal to zero emissions of harmful gases.
Opponents claim the project would produce widespread asthma and the smell of rotten eggs, which residents can’t avoid because many nearby homes have no air conditioning.
Kern Energy hopes to install seven fuel cells which can generate up to 3 megawatts of electricity.
