BAKERSFIELD, CA (KUZZ) — A man charged with shooting a gay activist to death at a Bakersfield park has entered a plea to a charge of voluntary manslaughter.
Fredi Rivera, 29, of Delano, pleaded no contest Wednesday in connection to the killing in September 2023 of Daniel Landeros, 43, at Yokuts Park on Empire Drive.
Court documents show Rivera shouted a homosexual slur at Landeros and his friend as they were walking through the park. The slur sparked an argument between Rivera and Landeros.
Landeros was an activist for the LGBTQ-plus community in Bakersfield.
Rivera will be sentenced March 17, 2026.
