BAKERFIELD, CA (KUZZ) — The City of Bakersfield has reached a multi-million-dollar settlement in a wrongful death lawsuit involving a former cop.
In 2023, officer Ricardo Robles collided with a car at the intersection of South Vineland and Muller road as he was responding to a police chase. The accident killed Mario Lares and severely injured Ana Hernandez, who were on their way home from work.
Robles pleaded no contest to vehicular manslaughter in 2024, and was sentenced to two years of probation and 500 hours of community service.
The $22 million payout to the Lares and Hernandez families is the largest of its kind in the city of Bakersfield and is set to be paid by June 1, 2026.
