BAKERSFIELD, CA (KUZZ) — A 20-year-old Visalia woman who left her two young boys inside a hot car in southwest Bakersfield was sentenced Thursday to 15 years in prison.
Maya Hernandez pleaded no contest to involuntary manslaughter after a jury deadlocked on a murder charge in December, following the death of Amilio Gutierrez, 1, last June. Hernandez was convicted of child cruelty, then agreed to a plea deal on the manslaughter charge.
Amilio and his brother Mateo, 2, were left alone inside the car for more than two hours while Hernandez underwent a cosmetic procedure at a medical spa on South Real Road.
Amilio died from heat stroke. Mateo survived.
Hernandez left her Toyota hybrid’s air conditioner on, but the vehicle shut off after an hour of inactivity.
