DELANO, CA (KUZZ) — The board of Cesar E. Chavez High School in Delano voted 3-to-2 Tuesday to change the name of the school.
The decision comes in the wake of allegations made against Cesar Chavez, who was accused of sexual abuse in a report released earlier this month by the New York Times.
Chavez, who died in 1993, co-founded United Farm Workers, a trade union for farmworkers notable for its representation of Latino workers across the United States and wider civil rights advocacy. He was accused of rape and other forms of sexual and emotional abuse by several union affiliates, including co-founder Dolores Huerta, who alleged that Chavez had raped and impregnated her twice.
The school board voted to form a committee that will select from a list of 10 school names that were presented in 2002.
