BAKERSFIELD, CA (KUZZ) — A judge will allow the Kern County District Attorney’s Office more time to gather documents to comply with a court order involving a car crash that killed Arvin educator Larry Hallum.
On Tuesday the judge ruled prosecutors were not negligent in failing to meet a deadline imposed by another judge who granted a defense motion last year seeking materials related to a potential violation of the state’s Racial Justice Act.
The lawyer representing Marque Qualls made that motion, claiming racial bias against his client who allegedly drove drunk and blew a red lightbefore hitting Hallum’s vehicle at the intersection of Old River Road and White Lane in February 2023.
Hallum was severely injured and died about a month after the accident.
Qualls is charged with second degree murder, among other charges.
