BAKERSFIELD, CA (KUZZ) — The Cesar Chavez mural in downtown Bakersfield was found painted over Thursday morning.
The words “BELIEVE SURVIVORS” were painted over the mural on the side of a business near 18th and M Streets.
KBAK-TV reports the vandalism comes weeks after a New York Times article accused Chavez of sexually abusing girls and women during the 1960s and 1970s.
UFW co-founder Dolores Huerta also claims Chavez raped her and fathered two children from those encounters.
The Bakersfield Californian reports the prominent mural was scheduled to be removed in April 2026.
