BAKERSFIELD, CA (KUZZ) — The Service Employees International Union has endorsed Ana Palacio of Bakersfield in the race for California’s Assembly District 35 seat.
Palacio is an ER nurse at Kern Medical with no previous political experience, however the union has donated thousands of dollars to her campaign as she battles city councilman Andrae Gonzales for the seat.
More than half of the $140,000 donated to Palacio’s campaign comes from SEIU.
The endorsement is an about-face for the labor union which has endorsed Gonzales in previous races.
Union representatives say they support Palacio because they believe she stands for change.
