Bakersfield assemblyman Rudy Salas has introduced a bill that would protect police under California hate crime laws.

He says the bill was prompted by recent shooting deaths of officers in New York City.

Lobbyists with the Fraternal Order of Police are trying to get crimes committed against police added to the national hate crimes list.
