Unemployment Down, Oilfield Layoffs Up

Revised numbers from the California Employment Development Department say 1,200 oilfield jobs in Kern County have been lost since January.

Rosendo Flores is a state labor market consultant and says the sector lost another 100 jobs in February, which doesn’t make the industry the biggest loser.

“Farm employment led the month-over declines, receding its workforce by 1,800 jobs, while trade, transportation and utilities fell by a net of 400 jobs,” he said.

Farms are still making seasonal layoffs, Flores said.

Total unemployment declined to 11 percent last month, down from 11.1 percent the month prior.
