PG&E has been fined $1.6 billion for a gas line explosion in San Bruno that killed eight people and destroyed 38 homes.

The California Public Utilities Commission says the unsafe operation of the utility’s gas transmission system led to the 2010 blast. It’s the largest fine ever issued by the agency.
