The search continues for the person or people who fired multiple rounds outside the secure perimeter of the North Kern State Prison near Delano, grazing a correctional officer inside the main gates.
Lt. Tom Mattson says the guard received minor injuries after his stab-resistant vest was struck at around 7:30 p.m. Monday.
“He’s recovering at home right now with his family, and is doing as well as expected,” he said. “Speaking with him this morning, he’s very relieved.”
The identity of the 18-year veteran guard hasn’t been released.
Mattson says the Kern County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation. Multiple agencies, including Delano Police Department and the California Highway Patrol, looked for suspects overnight.
