The Kern County Roads Department has opened 20 miles of bike lanes in northeast Bakersfield. Bike Bakersfield Executive Director Jason Cater says the bike lanes in places like College and Mount Vernon Avenues to roughly Brundage Lane and their side streets are very important. “There’s a lot of people in this area who depend on active transportation, biking and walking. And infrastructure like this really helps them have a safer place to ride. It helps to make the streets safer for everyone in general.” Cater says it took nearly three years to plan the lanes and put them into place after the County approved them.
