A man is dead after slipping into the into the Friant-Kern Canal, roughly a mile north of Lake Woollomes outside of Delano.

Lt. Bill Smallwood with the Kern County Sheriff’s Office says the man may have been fishing there Wednesday afternoon.

“We don’t know,” he said. “There was a truck and fishing equipment on the canal bank near the location of where the body was found.”

A nearby irrigation worker heard the man screaming and called 911 before 3 p.m. The victim’s name has not been released.
