Governor Urges $10K Fine for Biggest Water-Wasters

Gov. Brown is urging daily $10,000 fines for California’s biggest water-wasting businesses and homes.

A $500-per-day penalty is currently on the books. The proposal, which would require approval from the legislature, would allow water agencies, cities and counties to administer the fines.

Specifics of the proposal aren’t clear.

Brown announced his proposal after meeting in Sacramento with 14 mayors from California’s largest cities, but not Bakersfield mayor Harvey Hall.

Hall’s secretary says the mayor was given a last-minute invitation to the event on Tuesday and couldn’t attend because of other business. Hall was in Sacramento that day.
