Opening statements have been made in the trial of a man accused of killing a pregnant woman and her unborn baby at Fairview Road and Monitor Street in south Bakersfield.

Prosecutors say Joseph Maine was twice over the legal drinking limit when he ran a red light and struck Vanessa Carrillo’s vehicle last year. Defense witnesses are expected to take the stand Thursday.
