Coroner: Man Killed Self Before Being Struck By Police Gunfire

The coroner’s office says the Lancaster man who died after being shot at by Bakersfield police committed suicide.

26-year-old Leland Smithson shot himself in the head after crashing his car at East 18th and Owens streets Tuesday morning. The Bakersfield Police Department says he was trying to evade officers after robbing a downtown bank.
