The Kern County Superintendent of Schools office is offering a new program aimed at helping adults gain a better grasp on how to help children struggling with their mental health.

Tatia Hunter-Jennings coordinates the program and says the eight-hour course takes a new approach.

“This is like CPR, but for mental health issues,” she said. “People, when they see someone struggling with a physical issue, are going to respond. But, if it’s a mental health issue, that seems to not the the case.”

Hunter-Jennings says the courses are already underway, and are the first of their kind in Kern County.
