A sharp increase in the value of the dollar forced stocks into negative territory on Tuesday.

The Dow dropped 190 points, the Nasdaq fell 57 points and the S&P 500 lost 22 points. Benchmark crude dropped 1.2 percent, finishing at $59.00.
