Jury Deliberating in Fatal DUI Case

Jury deliberations have begun in the case of a man accused of killing a pregnant woman and her unborn child in a DUI crash in south Bakersfield.

During closing arguments Thursday, the attorney for Joseph Maine said his client had been drinking, but also had a green light at Monitor Street and Fairview Road when he struck a car carrying Vanessa Carillo and the child in 2014. He told jurors that the car Carillo was in was too far out into the intersection, and Maine could not avoid it.

Prosecutors say Maine’s blood alcohol level was at twice the legal limit.
