A man struck and killed during an illegal street race on Edison Highway has been identified by the coroner’s office as 22-year-old Patrick Mendez of Bakersfield.

Investigators say 24-year-old John Velazquez was going 80 miles per before hitting Mendez early Sunday east of Comanche Drive.

Mendez died at the scene. Velazquez was later arrested for DUI.
