City Nearing 36 Percent Conservation Target

Bakersfield missed its water conservation target in May, but the city is closing in on its state-mandated goal of 36 percent.

Jason Meadors is the city’s water resources director says water use was cut 26 percent during the first month of mandatory outdoor irrigation restrictions, up from 4.6 percent in April.

“Actually, it’s very encouraging that people are saving water,” he said. “We’re on the right track – I think people will continue to save water, and, hopefully, we can get to the 36 percent.”

Meadors says the mark must be hit this month, but wasn’t sure about the penalties the city could face if the goal isn’t achieved.
