A 23-year-old man was taken to a hospital after being rescued from an apartment fire in east Bakersfield.

Danny Brown is a battalion chief with the Bakersfield Fire Department and said heavy smoke and flames were seen coming from a second story unit at the complex on Lake Street and Beale Avenue after 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, and a second alarm was called before firefighters battled against the flames.

“People from around the area were trying to make entry into the apartment prior to our arrival,” he said. “We’ve had no other reports of injury, other than the person in critical condition.”
Brown said the cause of the fire is under investigation. It caused $250,000 damage.
