A 59-cent increase in the price of benchmark crude and reduced Chinese stock fears pushed the three major American indexes higher Tuesday.

The Dow jumped 190 points, the Nasdaq gained 49 and the S&P 500 added 26. Oil settled at $47.98 a barrel.
