Sentencing is set for Aug. 31 for a Lake Isabella man who pleaded no contest to second-degree murder in the death of his girlfriend’s one-year-old daughter.

Deputy District Attorney David Wilson says Jared Ramirez told investigators multiple stories about how Sophialynn Taylor suffered skull fractures and other serious injuries in January 2013.

“Ultimately, the last version – at least the last version that he told law enforcement – is that he threw her, and he missed the mattress he was aiming for,” he said.

Ramirez told investigators he was trying to get the girl to stop crying.

He faces up to life in prison.

The mother, Amanda Reese, will stand trial next month. She faces child cruelty charges.
