The newest member of the Bakersfield Police Department is one year old, barks, and has a tail and a wet nose.

Maverick, a Belgium Malinois from Hungary, will join the canine force after eight weeks of initial training.

Police dogs work between four and six years before entering retirement, according to a Bakersfield Police Department press release.

The department says a donation from two local residents made Maverick’s purchase possible.
