Unemployment Edges Higher in Kern County

California’s employment development department says unemployment in Kern County increased from 9.9 percent in June to 10 percent in July.

Labor market consultant Rosendo Flores says a 4,500-job loss in government was offset by sharp gains in agriculture.

“Farm led the month with a normal seasonal increase of 6,200 jobs, as the summer harvest of fruit, such as peaches and nectarines, continued,” he said.

Flores says no jobs on the oil patch were lost last month.
