Council to Not Vote on Full Fireworks Ban Sept. 2

The Bakersfield City Council’s legislative and litigation committee has opted to postpone a decision on whether to draft a ban of all fireworks within city limits, deciding instead to collect more information on the issue.

City Attorney Ginny Gennaro says fire chief Doug Greener urged change Monday.

“The fire chief recommended that fireworks – both legal, the safe-and-sane, and the illegal – be banned from the city of Bakersfield,” she said.

Councilman Harold Hanson proposed the ban, citing safety and property damage concerns. Those against the idea say the ordinance would affect non-profit fundraising.
