OIL PRICES THE HOT TOPIC AT STATE OF THE COUNTY

Business leaders and government officials worried about how the drop in oil prices will affect the future fiscal year gathered in Bakersfield for the annual State of the County address.

Board of Supervisors Chairman Mick Gleason gave the address last night and stressed that Kern County, “…is not defined by the price of a barrel of oil.” Gleason acknowledged that the region is facing significant budget shortfalls, but also stressed he is committed to saving as many programs as possible.

District Two Supervisor Zack Scrivner said afterwards that he’s also confident Kern County can weather the storm, but acknowledges the drop in funding will require everyone to be innovative in their thoughts.

The Board meets February 2nd for midyear budget talks, which may lead to significant spending cuts.

It wasn’t all serious, though. Last night’s event also celebrated the county’s 150th anniversary.
