KERN COUNTY SHERIFFS WARN OF PHONE SCAM

Sheriffs are urging residents to be aware of a possible phone scam happening in Kern County.

Law enforcement is asking the public not to take calls from the number 661-699-7576 after a local grandmother was phoned by a man claiming to be her “oldest” grandson. She quickly hung up because she has only one.

An investigation revealed it is a common number used in internet-based phone phishing scams. The con has the caller say they are a grandson or granddaughter who is out of the country and need money wired to them.

Deputies recommend hanging up immediately if the call is taken and remind the public not to give out private information or bank account numbers over the phone.
