SUIT FOR HISPANIC VOTER DISTRICT

A Latino advocacy group filed suit to create a minority-majority supervisors district. The Mexican-American Legal Defense and Educational Fund filed suit in U.S. District Court Friday saying the Voting Rights Act of 1964 was violated when Kern County Supervisors redrew district lines in 2011. Under the law, the suit claims a district should have been established in northern Kern County that would have a majority of Hispanics. Otherwise, that population would not be able to determine the candidate that will represent them on the board. MALDEF attorneys say they want a new majority-minority district created in time for the 2018 Supervisors elections.
