DOUBLE LIFE TERMS FOR BALASSA

A former mixed martial artist was sentenced Monday for beating a gay couple to death.  Joaquin Balassa has been sentenced to two terms of life in prison without parole. He testified he killed Jose Fajardo and Guy Koukal at his Techachapi apartment in September 2014 after they raped him. Prosecutors said in court they believe one of the victims made a pass at Balassa prompting him to attack. The District Attorney had declined to seek the death penalty.
