A 24-hour online drive for local charities has collected more than $173,000.

The first annual Give Big Kern Day connected donors with more than 150 non-profit groups, but Rachel Evey with the Kern Community Foundation says Tuesday’s event was really about showing appreciation for all the good work the organizations do.

Not every gift was financial; many people pledged to volunteer for their favorite cause.
