FROM FIRST-DEGREE TO 6 YEARS

A man who shot an unarmed victim as he ran away is going to prison after taking a plea deal for voluntary manslaughter. 58-year-old Steve Gilmore was sentenced Thursday to 6 years for killing 24-year-old Benito Carillo of Bakersfield after catching him peeping in the window of his Lebec home last December. Gilmore was originally charged with first-degree murder but defense attorneys implied the victim had been looking in the window of Gilmore’s 9-year-old daughter. That did not sit well with the victim’s family who said he was looking for someone in the neighborhood.
