A RECORD THAT’S JUST NUTS

It’s a record year for California almonds despite the ongoing drought. Federal estimates announced Wednesday project 2.05 Billion pounds of the popular nuts, surpassing the 2011 record by 20 million pounds. Kern County lead the nation in almond production in the late Nineties but now ranks fifth in the state. Our state produces 80% of the world’s supply of almonds. New varieties of trees and fungicides that allow trees to grow closer together are credited for the increase in production despite having less water available.
