The Public Utilities Commission began their public hearings in Bakersfield.PG & E are asking for a 17% rate increase spread over the next three years and a statewide series of public comment hearings began Monday with two sessions in Bakersfield. Public officials like Mayor Harvey Hall and the Chamber of Commerce spoke in favor of the increase saying it helps the utility company be a good community partner. Homeowners spoke against it saying the Central Valley has more poverty and higher electricity usage because of excessive heat. A final decision by the PUC will come early next year.
