GRASS TO APARTMENT FIRE

A simple grass fire became an apartment fire in central Bakersfield. The fire began at 7:00 PM Friday near a canal behind apartments on Union Avenue and then spread to brush and palm trees. That sent embers onto the roof of an apartment building and a nearby business. Battalion Chief Dan Brown said his crews were able to quickly get to 6 or 7 spot fires on the roof and put them out before they got into the attic. He said wood shingle roofs in hot, dry weather burn very easily. Thanks to resident Chris Current for the photo.
